DTI steps into bloggers' promos

Will this move affect our Local blogosphere? Read on...

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has stepped into the promotional activities of the exploding number of bloggers in the country by coming up with guidelines to protect consumers against scams and unscrupulous bloggers.

DTI secretary Gregory L. Domingo, who met with over 30 bloggers recently, told reporters they are coming up with guidelines to govern the conduct of promotional activities of bloggers.

The DTI is the government agency that regulates and approves all promotional activities to guard against fraudulent advertising.

“Since this is a new area, we have to craft regulations,” Domingo said.

While the guidelines are being crafted carefully to ensure there is no loophole, Domingo said they are putting up ‘de minimis’ rules as an interim guideline.

This means that promotional activities involving a budget of P1 million a year and for corporate sponsorship of P200,000 may be exempted from registering with the DTI.

Domingo noted that if the mechanism is through raffle, say for instance T-shirts then that would not be a problem, but if it is random sampling there must be some regulations that should be followed.

During the consultation, bloggers, however, said they do not earn from their promotional activities.

Domingo, however, could not say if the move to regulate promotional activities being engaged by bloggers was a result of complaints by consumers except to say that it is about time to put some regulations because of the explosion of bloggers and their promo activities. “We are watching against fraudulent and undesirable activities involving promo activities,” Domingo said. Using Facebook For Promo Contests

Using Facebook is an inexpensive way to market promo contests for your brand. However Facebook has its own rules and guidelines that every web marketeer must follow when using their Fansite for promotional activities. For example when running a contest or promo on Facebook it is not possible to run a voting contest directly on your Facebook page. Promotions on Facebook must be administered within Apps on Facebook.com, either on a Canvas Page or an app on a Page Tab.

You also cannot allow voting directly on the Facebook website using the “like” button. Although, liking your Facebook page can give people access to the entry form. In addition making a notification of winnings using Facebook is prohibited.

A fine print stating that your promo is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with Facebook should be visible to all participants or Fanpage visitors.

For the best promo such as a photo contest it is ideal to get a Third-party applications which capable to upload content directly to your Fansite. But you can only do this with PRIOR WRITTEN APPROVAL from Facebook.

You can read the new Facebook rules on giveaways, promotions, drawings and sweepstakes here .

Be sure to follow Facebook promotion guidelines. We heard cases that Facebook banned a Fansite with 100,000 likes. It could cost you alot of time and money to rebuild your followers.

Remember that this is Facebook's service, and it can do what it wants with it.
